Shawn Ford, one Concrete Equipment & Supply’s Windsor outside sales representatives, sat down to share a day in his life and a little bit of his experience Forming The Rockies.
Years in the Industry: I’ve been with CES for 6 years, but I’ve been in the industry since 1981. I started at Gates where I worked with my dad, then I managed Ellis Construction Specialties for 27 years.
Favorite Jobsite: The Shambhala Mountain Center near Red Feather Lakes, the Buddhist temple. It was built by volunteers. That’s probably the most memorable and technical job I’ve completed. I really enjoyed working on the Olympic Museum in Colorado Springs, the GC was G.E. Johnson Construction. But it’s hard to choose a favorite, there’s something different with every job I do.
Biggest Daily Challenge: All of the different attitudes, they range some days. I go with the flow but there are a few days, you know. But I’ve only hung up the phone on someone twice since I’ve been in the business [laughs]
Day In the Life: I leave my house at 6:00 every morning. If I go to a jobsite, have meetings or make deliveries, that sets my morning, but I could be anywhere. I’ll drop equipment off at construction sites, deliver to contractors and place more orders if they need anything else – superintendents, foremen too – and visit jobsites. It just depends on where I am and what I need to do. Most afternoons I’ll have meetings then catch up on quotes, finish up more orders, handle freight bills, work on large projects, find equipment, deal with things in the yard, whatever I need to be doing. I’ll deal with drawings, visit with engineers, call vendors for products and whatever I need to find, just trying to get everything done for everyone [laughs]
Favorite thing about working at CES: It’s a family-owned company that started small, I like working for companies owned by families. That’s personable to me, much easier than working for a big corporate entity, it’s not complicated. I like getting to know people in the industry, not just in Colorado but meeting people from all 50 states. We treat our salespeople totally different, too. I try to do my best, I care about what I do.
